Here it is at 12:30 am and I (Jim) just started retirement 30 minutes ago (or 5:30 pm yesterday if you want to be technical). The end of 42 years of becoming a refined bureaucrat! Thirty years with the feds (USPHS Commissioned Corps and detailed to USEPA on its inception December 2, 1970).
The real excitement started last week with a retirement bash on Friday. It was supposed to be somewhat of a surprise, but I (Jim) knew something was in the works, just not the extent. I have not seen a total count, but it was over 100!
Carol Walker and Matthew Mahler (the artist) had spent hours and hours of painting an Alaskan landscape on some sort of heavy paper and had the entire training room looking like an outdoor scene. Lots of people and lots of snacks!
Secretary Ross was a special guest and he said many flattering things about me; but being a lawyer he was able to stretch my accomplishments somewhat. I learned later that he was off for the day and had come in just to do the retirement speech. There were lots of official (e.g. signed by Governor Easley) and unofficial (e.g. 100,000 Krispy Kreme purchase plaque) and lots of flowery and distorted stretch truths said. It was a hoot!
Then came the video that several, including Jerome Moore, Bebhen Do, and several others which I will add when I get a full correct list, had gotten pictures from my family, friends and the various DAQ archives and done some video and photo magic with musical background. It was a HUGE product that I got a copy of and will treasure and relive it over and over. I may be able to attach it here if I can figure it out.
Then there was an equally unabashed arrest and trial featuring members of the DAQ Supervisory Corps including the Section Chiefs and Regional Supervisors with Rob Fisher of WarO in the lead as the arresting officer. They tried me for various egregious crimes against the Internet- none of course being true! I was defended by Brock Nicholson who did not help my cause a bit as he seemed in agreement with the plaintiff. More about these things later when I get more materials to post.
